Chapter Ten

Grace

I cannot believe I did that. Adam follows me down the stairs and I spot Samson at the bottom which causes a smile to spread across my face for the second time today. Honestly, I thought I’d scare him off or make him eat his words. I don’t know what came over me. I was feeling guilty and emotional about my parents and he was there supporting me. I felt the urge to show him the real me. It was terrifying and liberating at the same time. But he’s not running for the hills like I thought he would.

Adam was even complementary and acted like these scars aren’t that big of a deal. It’s like a huge weight has been lifted from my shoulders. I’ve been toying with the idea of letting him see my face since he flirts with me on occasion, but I wasn’t sure his feelings were genuine. After showing him my face, I know they are. There was no disgust in his gaze or a sharp intake of breath. He looked … lovestruck. It was surreal. I dreamed of him looking at me like that, and I can’t believe he said I was beautiful. My confidence just took a huge boost.

I lead him to the table outside where I see two boxes of pizza waiting. I can’t remember the last time I was outside with someone. In the daylight, no less, where every scar can be seen perfectly. This should be interesting.

“Okay.” Adam’s voice causes me to turn. “The real big question I have …” Oh, no. What’s he going to ask? “Pepperoni or cheese?” I almost bust out laughing but refrain and take on a serious face.

“Now, that is a serious question. I’ll have to go with cheese.” I smile. Adam’s hand rests over his heart.

“You don’t know how happy I am to hear that. I thought you were going to choose pepperoni and then you would’ve broken my heart.” I like this playful side of Adam. It feels normal and I ache to hold on to this moment for a little while longer.

“It’s all yours.” Waving at the pizza box, I adjust my cloak to keep my horns covered. Adam may have felt like the big reveal was my face, but he still has no idea about my horns. The problem is, they grow. They actually haven’t stopped growing since the accident. I don’t know what I’m going to do when my hood can no longer cover them. It’s not like I haven’t tried to file them down, but they return the next day, just as they were, looking untouched. It’s frustrating and, eventually, I might have to breakdown and seek medical help.. The weight of them has put a constant ache in my neck and I only see more problems with that in the foreseeable future.

They appeared shortly after my last surgery in the hospital. I was still in recovery when a nurse gasped at the sight of the black nubs on my head.
